Mountain Khakis Teton Flannel Shirt: AKA The Buffalo Shirt

Dec 8, 2011

My girlfriend calls this shirt, “the buffalo shirt.”  Not because of the Mountain Khakis buffalo logo (actually she doesn’t even know that the logo for Mountain Khakis is a buffalo.  She probably hasn’t ever even heard of Mountain Khakis), but because it reminds her of the guy below.  Watch this video; trust me you’ll thank me later.  Plus if you don’t watch it, this review will make absolutely no sense.

I wrote a post a while back saying that I wished I was more like Guy on a Buffalo.  Guy on a Buffalo metaphorically represents so many things that outdoorsy men strive for. For starters, he’s a real bad ass.  He answers to no one.  Well, at least to no person; he’s somewhat of a pushover for his buffalo, but that’s like any super manly outdoors guy who is a pushover for his dog.  Still very manly and it arguably makes him even more manly because instead of dog-best friend, he’s got a buffalo.  Second, he’s super ballsy. Sitting on top of a buffalo would turn any wimpy man’s baby makers into mash potatoes and gravy but in his case, he most definitely delivers more pain to the buffalo.  And while Guy on a Buffalo can deliver pain to any man, much less, any buffalo, he’s a man with a compassionate heart.  Saving a baby? Pretty compassionate. Giving the baby to a widow? That’s like the most compassionate thing an outdoorsy man could do.  Is he a softy?  Never.

The tagline for Mountain Khakis, “Rise Above It,” says a lot about what they’re about.  There are people who bicker in the office over the colors of bar charts in Powerpoint presentations.  Then there are people who rise above it.  Who go out and tame buffaloes, then ride them.

I have other comfortable shirts, but for some reason, this shirt has a draw.  For instance, the other day, I walked into my father’s office and he asked me for my shirt.  He literally said, “Son, where did you get that shirt?  Can I have it?” Of course I responded with astonishment, and then with a simple “no,” but the point being that my father used to be an alpine climber and the fact that he was drawn to the shirt says something.  It’s just a normal comfortable red plaid shirt, but when I have it on, I feel like Guy on a Buffalo.

I told my girlfriend that I was planning on buying 9 more of these exact shirts, all different colors, but so I could wear one each weekday for 2 weeks without washing.  She was appalled (to say the least).  Maybe one day, I’ll rise above it and just do it.  And when I do, I’m sure I’ll be wearing my red Teton Flannel Shirt.
